जिला सिरमौर के खोदरी माजरी गांव के युवा शोधार्थी ऋषुध ठाकुर ने अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर प्रदेश का नाम रोशन किया है। वर्तमान में वह अमेरिका के प्रतिष्ठित स्टैनफोर्ड विश्वविद्यालय में भू-भौतिकी (जियोफिजिक्स) विषय में पीएचडी कर रहे हैं। उनका शोध सैटेलाइट डेटा के माध्यम से जलवायु परिवर्तन के प्रभावों का अध्ययन करने तथा जंगलों, जल-स्रोतों और जैव-विविधता के संरक्षण पर केंद्रित है। ऋषुध ठाकुर को हाल ही में स्टैनफोर्ड विश्वविद्यालय की डोर स्कूल ऑफ सस्टेनेबिलिटी की 22 सदस्यीय एडवाइजरी काउंसिल में 200 से अधिक पीएचडी छात्रों में से दो छात्र प्रतिनिधियों में शामिल किया गया है। इस प्रतिष्ठित काउंसिल में अमेरिकी उद्योगपति एवं समाजसेवी बिल गेट्स, टाटा संस के चेयरमैन एन. चंद्रशेखरन, उद्योगपति जमशेद गोदरेज, नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता वैज्ञानिक तथा अन्य वैश्विक विशेषज्ञ शामिल हैं। दो वर्षीय कार्यकाल के दौरान ऋषुध छात्रों की राय विश्वविद्यालय के शीर्ष नेतृत्व तक पहुंचाएंगे। ऋषुध का गांव हिमाचल-उत्तराखंड सीमा पर टोंस और यमुना नदियों के संगम क्षेत्र में स्थित है। बचपन से प्रकृति और पर्यावरण के प्रति उनका विशेष लगाव रहा है। वेल्लोर इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ टेक्नोलॉजी से बी.टेक के दौरान वर्ष 2018 में केरल और कर्नाटक में आई विनाशकारी बाढ़ ने उन्हें सैटेलाइट तकनीक के माध्यम से आपदा पूर्वानुमान पर शोध करने के लिए प्रेरित किया।
इसके बाद उन्होंने कर्नाटक के कूर्ग क्षेत्र के बाढ़ संभावित इलाकों का सैटेलाइट आधारित नक्शा तैयार किया।आईआईटी रुड़की में रिसर्च इंटर्नशिप के दौरान उन्होंने देवदार, बांज और चीड़ जैसे वृक्षों की प्रजातियों तथा जंगलों में कार्बन भंडारण का सैटेलाइट आधारित अध्ययन किया। वर्ष 2021 से 2023 के बीच उन्होंने स्टैनफोर्ड विश्वविद्यालय से एनवायरनमेंटल इंजीनियरिंग में मास्टर्स की डिग्री प्राप्त की। इसी दौरान उन्हें नासा में तीन माह तक शोध कार्य करने का अवसर मिला, जहां उन्होंने सैटेलाइट डेटा की सहायता से फसलों की सिंचाई आवश्यकताओं का आकलन किया। स्टैनफोर्ड विश्वविद्यालय ने उत्कृष्ट शिक्षण के लिए ऋषुध ठाकुर को शताब्दी शिक्षण पुरस्कार से भी सम्मानित किया है। उनका मानना है कि सैटेलाइट डेटा भारत जैसे देशों के लिए कम लागत में बड़े क्षेत्रों की निगरानी और प्राकृतिक संसाधनों के संरक्षण का प्रभावी माध्यम बन सकता है। पीएचडी पूरी करने के बाद ऋषुध भारत लौटकर हिमाचल में रहकर शोध कार्य करने और स्थानीय समुदाय को पर्यावरण संरक्षण से जोड़ने की इच्छा रखते हैं। उन्होंने प्रदेशवासियों से जंगलों, पहाड़ों और जल-स्रोतों के संरक्षण का आह्वान करते हुए कहा कि प्रकृति को सबसे बड़ा खतरा मानव गतिविधियों से है, इसलिए सभी को इसके संरक्षण की जिम्मेदारी निभानी चाहिए।ऋषुध अपनी इस उपलब्धि का श्रेय अपनी माता शांति ठाकुर, पिता डी.एस. ठाकुर तथा अपने शिक्षकों को देते हैं, जिन्होंने हर कदम पर उनका मार्गदर्शन और उत्साहवर्धन किया।

Rishudh Thakur, a young researcher from Khodri Majri village in Sirmaur district, has brought laurels to the state on the international stage. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Geophysics at the prestigious Stanford University in the USA. His research focuses on studying the impacts of climate change using satellite data and on the conservation of forests, water sources, and biodiversity. Recently, Rishudh was selected as one of only two student representatives—chosen from over 200 PhD students—to serve on the 22-member Advisory Council of Stanford University's Doerr School of Sustainability. This prestigious council includes American industrialist and philanthropist Bill Gates, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, industrialist Jamshyd Godrej, Nobel Prize-winning scientists, and other global experts. During his two-year tenure, Rishudh will convey the students' perspectives to the university's top leadership. Rishudh's village is located at the confluence of the Tons and Yamuna rivers on the Himachal-Uttarakhand border. He has held a deep affinity for nature and the environment since childhood. While pursuing his B.Tech at the Vellore Institute of Technology, the devastating floods that struck Kerala and Karnataka in 2018 inspired him to conduct research on disaster forecasting using satellite technology.
Subsequently, he created satellite-based maps of flood-prone areas in the Coorg region of Karnataka. During a research internship at IIT Roorkee, he conducted a satellite-based study on forest carbon storage and tree species such as Deodar, Banj (Oak), and Chir (Pine). Between 2021 and 2023, he earned a Master's degree in Environmental Engineering from Stanford University. During this period, he also had the opportunity to conduct research at NASA for three months, where he assessed crop irrigation requirements using satellite data. Stanford University has also honored Rishudh Thakur with the Centennial Teaching Award for excellence in teaching. He believes that satellite data can serve as an effective, low-cost tool for countries like India to monitor vast areas and conserve natural resources. After completing his PhD, Rishudh intends to return to India, conduct research while based in Himachal, and engage the local community in environmental conservation. Urging the people of the state to protect forests, mountains, and water sources, he noted that human activity poses the greatest threat to nature and emphasized that everyone must shoulder the responsibility of its preservation. Rishudh attributes this achievement to his mother, Shanti Thakur, his father, D.S. Thakur, and his teachers, who guided and encouraged him at every step.
