हिमाचल प्रदेश की सबसे बड़ी प्राकृतिक और पवित्र रेणुका जी झील के अस्तित्व को बचाने के लिए स्थानीय ग्रामीणों ने एक अनूठी पहल की है। झील में जमा होने वाली गाद, कचरे और जलीय खरपतवार की सफाई के लिए हर रविवार को बड़े पैमाने पर सेवा श्रमदान अभियान चलाया जा रहा है। इस अभियान की सबसे खास बात यह है कि इसमें किसी सरकारी मशीनरी का इंतजार किए बिना, ग्रामीण खुद पानी में उतरकर झील की सफाई कर रहे हैं और पर्यावरण संरक्षण की एक बेहतरीन मिसाल पेश कर रहे हैं। इस महा-श्रमदान की सबसे बड़ी और खूबसूरत बात यह है कि इसमें आधी आबादी यानी महिलाओं और देश के भविष्य यानी बच्चों की भागीदारी सबसे ज्यादा देखी जा रही है। घर का चूल्हा-चौका संभालने वाली ग्रामीण महिलाएं हर रविवार सुबह ही टोलियां बनाकर झील पर पहुंच जाती हैं और पुरुषों के साथ कंधे से कंधा मिलाकर गहरे पानी से कीचड़ निकालने में जुट जाती हैं। वहीं, स्कूल जाने वाले छोटे-छोटे बच्चे भी छुट्टी के दिन आराम करने के बजाय हाथों में थैले थामे झील के किनारों से प्लास्टिक की बोतलें और कचरा चुनते नजर आते हैं। बच्चों का यह जज्बा साबित करता है कि पर्यावरण संरक्षण का पाठ उन्होंने किताबों से ज्यादा इस जमीन पर उतरकर सीखा है। गौरतलब है कि रेणुका झील एक अंतरराष्ट्रीय 'रामसर साइट' है, जिसका धार्मिक महत्व होने के साथ-साथ बहुत बड़ा पर्यावरणीय मूल्य भी है। पिछले कुछ समय से पहाड़ों से बहकर आने वाली मिट्टी और पर्यटकों द्वारा छोड़े गए प्लास्टिक कचरे के कारण झील के पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र पर खतरा मंडरा रहा था। स्थानीय लोगों की इस निरंतर मुहिम ने न केवल झील के पानी को साफ और निर्मल बनाने में मदद की है, बल्कि वहां मौजूद दुर्लभ वन्यजीवों, मछलियों और कछुओं के जीवन को भी एक नया सुरक्षा कवच दिया है। इस अभियान से जुड़े स्थानीय नागरिकों का कहना है कि अपनी प्राकृतिक और धार्मिक धरोहरों की रक्षा करना केवल सरकार का नहीं, बल्कि हर नागरिक का कर्तव्य है। उन्होंने इस पावन स्थल पर आने वाले पर्यटकों से भी विशेष अपील की है कि वे परिसर में पॉलीथीन, प्लास्टिक की बोतलें या कचरा न फैलाएं। ग्रामीणों का यह सामूहिक प्रयास यह संदेश देता है कि यदि समाज ठान ले, तो बिना किसी सरकारी बजटीय मदद के भी बड़ी से बड़ी प्राकृतिक संपदा को पुनर्जीवित और संरक्षित किया जा सकता है।

It is worth noting that Renuka Lake is an international 'Ramsar Site,' holding immense environmental value alongside its religious significance. For some time, the lake's ecosystem had been under threat due to soil washing down from the mountains and plastic waste left behind by tourists. This sustained campaign by local residents has not only helped restore the clarity and purity of the lake's water but has also provided a new layer of protection for the rare wildlife, fish, and turtles inhabiting the area. Local citizens involved in the campaign state that protecting natural and religious heritage is the duty of every citizen, not just the government. They have also made a special appeal to tourists visiting this sacred site to refrain from littering the premises with polythene bags, plastic bottles, or other waste. This collective effort by the villagers conveys the message that if society resolves to act, even the most significant natural resources can be revived and preserved without any government budgetary support.
