Nahan: HRTC Negligence on Kaulanwalabhud Route – 85 Passengers in a 32-Seater Bus; Management Seemingly Awaiting an Accident
Sabse Tez Khabar / Nahan
Nahan: Daily commuters on the route from the Sirmaur district headquarters (Nahan) to Kaulanwalabhud—via Surla-Chasi—are facing immense hardship due to a shortage of buses and rampant overloading. On Wednesday morning, a mere 32-seater electric bus was deployed as the first service from Kaulanwalabhud to Nahan; it was packed to the brim with approximately 80 to 85 passengers—more than double its capacity. Amidst this alarming situation, passengers are expressing deep outrage regarding safety concerns. Commuters point out that when there is absolutely no space left in the bus, a serious accident could occur in the event of an emergency or a technical failure. Surprisingly, just two or three days ago, frustrated passengers on this route had staged a protest against the management at the Nahan bus stand. At that time, the transport management had cited a shortage of drivers and stated that operating the 5:30 PM bus was not feasible, though they had promised to run a larger 47-seater bus at 5:00 PM instead. Despite this, a low-capacity electric bus was sent again on Wednesday morning, exposing the gap between the management's claims and the reality on the ground. Local commuters state that the volume of daily travelers on this route is very high; consequently, small 32-seater buses are proving completely inadequate to handle the crowd. Passengers are forced to risk their lives while commuting. Attempts to contact the Regional Manager of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) in Nahan by telephone to get the management's perspective on this matter went unanswered. Local residents have appealed to the Transport Department and the administration to deploy high-capacity buses on the Kaulanwalabhud-Nahan route, taking into account the actual number of passengers; this would resolve the recurring issue of overloading and ensure safer travel.
